East Albany B&G club showcased in national commercial

The club has partnered with Albany WG&L to push energy conservation

— The children at the East Albany Boys & Girls Club are the focus of a new nationwide advertising campaign by the Environmental Protection Agency because of their efforts to conserve electricity.

The EPA funded and produced the commercial which showcases the East Albany club's partnership with the Albany Water, Gas & Light Commission to promote energy conservation.

"These kids are just amazing," WG&L's Lorie Van Linden told the WG&L Board Thursday. "It's a positive story about the good things these kids are doing and it's being shown nationally so it's just a really good thing."

The spot focuses on the group's efforts to use appliances, bulbs and utilities with the Energy-Star label and how the participants in the group are taking their knowledge home with them to share with their parents and relatives.

According to the Energy Star website, "ENERGY STAR is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy helping us all save money and protect the environment through energy efficient products and practices."

The program touts that, through the program enough energy was saved in 2010 to equate to the greenhouse emissions of 33 million cars and helped consumers save $18 billion on utility bills.

Good for the kids! Don't have any confidence in the EPA savings estimates, however.
