Hubbard gains endorsements

Dorothy Hubbard

Dorothy Hubbard

ALBANY — On a week when mayoral candidate Dorothy Hubbard had been given the support of some in the political arena, Thursday, Hubbard added a group of women who have had far-reaching impact in various facets of the community to her list of supporters.

A runoff Tuesday will decide whether Hubbard or local business owner B.J. Fletcher end up being the city’s first female mayor.

Thursday, four women who have had impacts in different areas of life in the local and national community went public with their efforts to push Hubbard into the seat.

Shirley Sherrod, Apostle Charlene Glover, Helen Young and Karen Wakeford each said that they believe Hubbard is the best choice for Albany.

“I’m endorsing Dorothy because I believe she has the three D’s that are needed for this city,” Glover, who ministers at Trumpet of God Ministries and Training Center, said. “She’s decisive, she has desire, and she’s determined and that, coupled with a positive vision to move the city forward is what we need most right now.”

Sherrod, who is married to civil rights leader and former city commissioner Charles Sherrod, said that Hubbard has the knowledge and the ability to work with people in every segment of the community and that’s why she believes Hubbard should be mayor.

“She has the experience in government as a commissioner; she’s familiar with the process and the people involved at the local and state and national level, and she’s a team builder,” Sherrod said.

Young, a local businesswoman and activist, said she believes Hubbard is the right choice because she wouldn’t require any “on the job training” and has the educational background to understand the importance of having a prepared workforce in order to entice businesses to Albany.

“I think she’s the appropriate person because she doesn’t have to worry about on the job training. She’s been around enough to know how the doors open and close,” Young said. “She also comes out of a education background and understands that businesses aren’t going to come here without this community being workforce ready.

Wakeford, former head of Keep Albany-Dougherty Beautiful and resident of Ward II, said she knows Hubbard from their early days as trustees for Girls Inc., and said that, while the city will have a strong mayor regardless of who ultimately wins, that Hubbard stands out because of her leadership style and her track-record of philanthropic work.

“With the needs of this city, we need someone in office with her experiences, her demeanor,” Wakeford said. “She listens to the issues, evaluates it and seeks input from others before making a decision. We need a deliberate type of leader like that.”

Thursday’s supporters join former Lt. Governor Mark Taylor and County Commissioner George Brown, who endorsed Hubbard Wednesday; and State Sen. Freddie Powell-Sims and Rep. Carol Fullerton, who endorsed Hubbard Monday.

Really now!? Shirley Sherrod?! If that doesn't say it all... LOL Now I fully believe all these endorsements are just a political horse and pony show.

The part that reads Shirley is a "civil rights leader" just made me laugh. I bet MLK is rolling over in his grave as I type this.

A "pastor" cannot endorse a political candidate without risk of having their tax-exempt status revoked. Remember Separation of Church and State? Or does that apply only if the pastor is endorsing a Conservative?

Mrs. Hubbard seems to think that she needs Jesus!! I think she does in this election as well. She is not an honest person AND having Preachers and churches endorse her is not going to mask the fact that she claims to be soooo much for education but has not contributed any thing towards education in her term as commissioner. She has served as Mayor Pro tem but that does not take a lot of experience to do. thats why they rotate the "title" among all the commissioners. I watched the debate the other night and I felt that Mrs. Hubbard showed that she is a very vindictive person that does not handle pressure well. SHE IS NOT A VERY WELL SPOKEN PERSON EITHER..FOR A PERSON THAT HAS BEEN IN EDUCATION FOR 20+ YEARS..IVE ALSO LEARNED THAT SHE WAS NOT AN EDUCATOR BUT WORKED IN ADMINISTRATION..SO STOP DECEIVING THE PUBLIC..YOU ARE NOT AN EDUCATOR NOR DO YOU CARE ABOUT EDUCATION IF YOU DID MRS. HUBBARD, WHY HAVE YOU NOT CONTRIBUTED ANY OF THE MONEY YOU WERE ALLOWED AS A COMMISSIONER TOWARDS EDUCATION???? YOU ALSO SAY THAT YOU AND YOUR HUSBAND HAVE BEEN BUSINESS OWNERS FOR 30 + YEARS.. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT KIND OF BUSINESS IT IS????? I THINK ALBANY NEEDS TO MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICE ON TUES DEC 6 AND VOTE BJ FLETCHER FOR MAYOR...SHE IS A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS WOMAN AND I THINK THATS WHAT ALBANY NEEDS IS TO BE RUN LIKE A BUSINESS BY A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS WOMAN!!!!

I have a problem about all these endorsers coming out saying that Hubbard wouldn't have to have on the job training, but it is ok that our school superintendent to have on the job training?

To have Sherrod endorse you should be an embarrassment. Both of these women have made money by saying they were going to improve the life of poor people, but, and it's a big BUT, the only two who have made money are Hubbard and Sherrod with a few of their close friends, the rest of us are still poor and getting poorer. BJ has helped people who work with her buy homes, get a car when they were walking, and she is always giving money to someone in need. She does not talk about this but it is well known by anyone who really knows this woman that she wants everyone to be proud of who they are. She does not want to be Mayor for the chance to rip off the folks, but to keep the people from being ripped off. Hubbard and BJ Fletcher can both talk, but it is Fletcher who is doing the walking. Albany is a year away from being a wasted town....our companies are leaving, our town is dirty, our children are uneducated and walking down the street with their butts showing. Let's find our pride and help ourselves. We need to get the people in charge to be good people, not more corrupt people who are buddies with other corrupt people.
