THEY SAID IT: “We’ve lost all five of last year’s starters — three of them seniors, and the other two (football stars Chris Brown and Dee Virgin) are focusing on their football futures. So I think to say we’re rebuilding is not even the right word; it’s almost like we’re totally starting over. That being said, we’ve got some good young players coming up, some 10th graders who will be asked to carry the load for us. I never thought I would be in this situation where we’d lose everybody, but sure enough we’re a work in progress. But I think we can come around and be pretty good.”

If we get enough guys to start buying into working hard and being committed — being here when we call a practice and the gym is open. We are just trying to find a core group that says, ‘I want to get better every day, just becoming the best player and person I can become. That’s what we’re trying to do here. Hopefully, we can have some success sooner rather than later. Some guys are starting to buy in.’’

— Tim Shaw, Baker County head coach

Former players playing in college: Javon Dawson (University of Utah).

Season/home opener: Today vs. Valdosta, 7:30 p.m.

They said it: “Well, we’re a senior-laden team with nine seniors out of the 14 we have. But we also have some young kids — that sophomore class is pretty good with Javoris and Taylor. Overall, we’ve got some ability and talent, but the question is, ‘Can our nine seniors lead us?’ We’ve been lacking that leadership in the past. If we can get that out of them, we’ll be pretty decent. But it’s going to be tough to just be decent in this region. In my opinion, 1-AAA is toughest region in Georgia.”

— Terry Smith, Crisp County head coach

Former players playing in college: Mariah Davis (Emannuel College).

Season/home opener: Today vs. Valdosta, 6 p.m.

They said it: “As far as last year, how we did tells the story about what we’re capable of doing. This year, we need to step it up even more. We have four girls who can score in double figures on any given night and my goal is to get Nashemma to average 18 points this year. We need to get her numbers up because she’s such a selfless player and kicks it out too much. We just need to get better each game and keep playing good defense — defense wins games. But we also need to put more points on the board, and keep the turnovers down. This is a strong region but we’re all optimistic about our chances”

NEXT GAME: Saturday at Worth County, 6 p.m.

They said it: “I love our chemistry, these kids like each other, like to play together, don’t have discipline problems and they’re all on same page. I see a lot of hustle so far because we put a scrappy-do lineup out there — they get all over the court. We just need to make sure that we’re sprinting in the end of games, rebounding, making good passes — doing those things. We’ll really be tested early in the season, and we’ll see real quick where we are.”

THEY SAID IT: “We just need to be more consistent and shoot for a better percentage. We played some good teams in Atlanta over the summer (with some) 6-foot-7, 6-8 (players), and stayed close. We’ve just got to be real patient.”

— Jim Eubanks, Randolph Southern head coach

Sherwood Coach Sons: these coaches like to come to the movie church school but don't wind up staying long for SOME reason (shock and disappointment maybe?). Last year was Coach Sons first year and this year will probably be his last. Why not schedule some teams in your own AAA bracket when you have the option rather than A and sub-A teams?
