Fletcher best pick to move Albany ahead

My friend B.J. Fletcher is running for mayor of Albany. She and I have many of the same qualities regarding our beginnings and our vision for a better Albany. Like B.J., I was born in Albany and returned to Albany at a later date to make my home for me and my family. In the early ’80s, Albany’s outlook was encouraging to those of us who returned home. B.J. has stated that one of our largest exports is our youth. I have seen isolated greed and sectionalism in our great city. East versus West, and North versus South Albany have become issues unto themselves. When I worked diligently in Mayor Adams’ campaign eight years ago, I was hopeful that racial issues would be less of an issue after the election of an African-American mayor. Sadly, I have not seen this city come together any more than it was 10 years ago.

B.J. Fletcher represents a fresh change and appears to be the kind of leader that can bring all factions of our community together to move forward into the future. She has a vision for Albany, as well as a plan. She doesn’t just talk political rhetoric; she has concrete ideas that she puts into motion. She has claimed to be able to create 4,000 jobs over the next four years. In the Wednesday before Thanksgiving Albany Herald, she outlined her plan. Two years ago prior to running for mayor, she stated that she could create 500 jobs in six months. Many people scoffed at her when she said this. However, at the end of six months, she had created 510 jobs.

There are many wonderful things about our city. Our most wonderful resource is our people. We can have a better city if the people of Albany are allowed to live in a safe and productive environment. B.J. is an experienced businesswoman who will look at all aspects of our city government. Our interaction with our neighbors, promoting our city to other parts of the state, nation and world will be high on her agenda. She will also look at the itemized business of running our city to protect the taxpayers from wasteful spending.

It is time for a change and to get a new look of leadership in our city government. If you are happy with Albany as it is today and do not want to see a change for the better, then do not vote for B.J. Fletcher. But, if you do want to see Albany return to a place of prominence in Southwest Georgia, culturally and industrially, give B.J. a chance to lead us forward and vote B.J. Fletcher mayor of Albany Dec. 6.
