LEESBURG — While assisting the Albany Police Department on another case, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office stumbled upon something more significant.

The sheriff’s office, along with the Albany-Dougherty Drug Unit and the Lee County Fire Department, were among those involved with the discovery of a meth lab in Lee County Monday.

It all started a little after 10:30 a.m., when someone from the sheriff’s office showed up to a mobile unit at 448 White Pond Road in Leesburg.

“The meth lab was discovered by deputies sent to have a talk with someone here (at the mobile unit),” said Lee Sheriff Reggie Rachals. “Indications were that there was a meth lab on site.

“The person came out and gave himself up.”

The deputies had been sent out in an effort to help the APD investigate a burglary case, Rachals said.

At 3 p.m., there were people in Hazmat suits still collecting evidence from the lab — which was primarily contained in a shed behind the home.

An active hydrogen generator was among the items found in the shed.

“I’m not sure how extensive it is, but it seems pretty extensive because of the precautions we are taking here,” Rachals said at the scene.

Arrested in connection to the incident was Randy Dale Gibson, 32. Living in the unit with him was his wife and two children, one of whom is an infant.

Gibson has been charged with manufacturing meth, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of tools during the commission of a crime. Rachals indicated Monday that there would be more charges pending.

The lab found in Gibson’s shed is not likely connected to another drug operation, the sheriff said.
