AMERICUS — Lee County girls’ basketball coach Fran McPherson said her team has had a grueling schedule to start the season.
On Tuesday in the Americus-Sumter Holiday Classic, the Lady Trojans notched a win against one of those tough opponents. DaQuenna Moore scored 22 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead Lee County to a 58-54 victory against Mundy’s Mill out of Atlanta. It was only the second loss of the season for Mundy’s Mill, while Lee County improved to 5-5.
The Lady Trojans led by four points at halftime, but Mundy’s Mill came back in the second half to take a five-point lead. However, Lee County hit its shots down the stretch to bounce back out in front.
Also scoring in double figures for the Lady Trojans was Maggie O’Conner, who had 16 points.
Lee County is in action again Jan. 7 against Westover in the Albany Civic Center.
LEE COUNTY BOYS 66, WEBSTER COUNTY 61: After opening the season with eight straight losses, the Trojans have now won two in a row. Tuesday’s win against Webster County gave Lee County a 2-0 record in the Americus-Sumter Holiday Classic.
And like in Monday’s victory against Americus-Sumter when Tavian Reed scored a team-high 20 points, Reed led the Trojans in scoring again Tuesday night.
The Trojans (2-8) play again Jan. 7 against Westover in the Albany Civic Center.
TIFT COUNTY BOYS 39, BAINBRIDGE 37: After a Bainbridge foul in the closing seconds of Tuesday night’s game, Tift County knocked down a pair of free throws to walk away with the two-point victory.
Bainbridge’s Dontavius Marshall hit five 3-pointers and scored a team-high 15 points in a game that came down the final possession.
Herald No. 4 Bainbridge was whistled for a foul on a loose ball, which sent Tift County to the free throw line with just seconds left. The Blue Devils hit the first free throw and grabbed an offensive rebound on the second free throw to ice the game.
Bainbridge (6-3) plays again Dec. 29 and 30 in Tallahassee, Fla., in the Capitol City Classic.
