Ex-Albany, Dougherty coach Welsh to be honored Saturday

THOMSON - Luther Welsh, the former Albany High and Dougherty football coach who spent nearly two decades in Southwest Georgia, is being honored Saturday in a retirement ceremony in his last coaching stop in Thomson. The ceremony is being dubbed "Coach Luther Welsh Day."

The 78-year-old Welsh, whose last season in Albany was 1983 when he left as head coach of Dougherty, will be honored at the Thomson Depot from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Welsh retired after the 2010 season with the Thomson Bulldogs, whom he coached during two different stints over the span of 19 years.

Welsh is currently battling throat cancer, but has already beaten another form of cancer once in his life.

He said recently he hopes to win the fight yet again.

I want to beat this thing, again," Welsh told the McDuffie Mirror last week in an interview. "Everybody has been real good to me. That really means a lot to me that people around here really do care. They're showing me they care. And I'll never forget it."
