Landlord files papers to evict Hooters restaurant

ALBANY, Ga. -- The property owner whose land houses the Hooters Restaurant on Old Dawson Road says that restaurant officials owe more than $24,000 in unpaid rent and that he fully intends to carry through on an eviction action he's filed in Dougherty County Superior Court.

Joe Watkins said he's tried to work with the owners of the Hooters of Albany franchise, but they have twice failed to show up to meetings scheduled to renegotiate a lease for the property on Old Dawson Road and have yet to pay two months in back rent.

He said the group's lease was up on Jan. 31 and has not been carried over into 2011. Additionally, he contends the restaurant operators owe him more than $24,000 in unpaid rent.

"I've tried to set up negotiations with them for a new lease and have tried to be very, very patient with them, but when their December check bounced, they said it would be paid and it still hasn't (been)," Watkins said.

He's filed a dispossessory action with the court and could have restaurant personnel out as soon as Monday if they don't respond.

Attempts to reach the operators of the restaurant were unsuccessful.

Watkins said the Hooters operators told him they had fallen on hard times but that they'd honor their debts, a promise he says that has yet to be fulfilled.
