ALBANY, Ga. -- Some small businesses don't have the luxury of a functional human resources department.
That is where the Albany Area Employer Committee comes in.
The committee, along with the Georgia Department of Labor Albany Career Center, is co-sponsoring a seminar for businesses in the area concerning proper procedures for hiring and terminating personnel.
"It's a great opportunity for managers to get in a group of like-minded folks," said Beth Lane, chairwoman of the employer committee. "We do (the seminars) on a quarterly basis."
The event will take place from 8:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. on Feb. 15 at the career center, located at 1608 S. Slappey Blvd.
Entitled "From Hiring to Firing -- All the Pieces Should Fit," the seminar is especially designed for business owners, human resources managers, supervisors and entrepreneurs. Jimmy Lindsey, director of human resources and marketing at AB&T National Bank, will lead the seminar -- which will focus on areas such as how to make the most of a hiring interview, new employee orientations, progressive discipline and dismissal.
"The best thing (about the seminars) is the networking," Lane said. "People come and there is plenty of time (to network) before the program starts. It's where I've gotten the majority of my contacts from."
Employer committees are groups of local business representatives who establish and maintain working relationships between employers and the Labor Department's career centers.
Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., with the program set to start at around 9 a.m. There is a $20 registration fee, which includes a continental breakfast.
"I expect we are going to have an excellent response," Lane said. "There are a lot of good folks we have the ability to hire. It's important we make the right decision."
Those who bring in a stuffed bear for the "Bearable Hugs" campaign as part of the ongoing fatherhood initiative can get $5 off their registration.
