FINAL TOP 5 POLL:

BOYS:

1.) Bainbridge .................................................... 23-2

The final Top 5 Poll of the year has a new No. 1: BHS, which unseats Monroe after having won 20 games in a row. Next: Region 1-AAAA tournament, vs. Houston, Wednesday, 8:30 p.m.

2.) Monroe ............................................................21-4

After sitting atop the poll all year, a loss to Westover in the regular-season finale drops the Tornadoes. Next: Region 1-AAA tournament, vs. Dougherty or Americus, Thursday, 5:30 p.m.

3.) Terrell County ...............................................20-3

The Greenwave stay put at No. 3 in the final poll, and have won 16 of their last 18 games to enter the region tournament red-hot. Next: Region 1-A tournament, vs. TBD, Thursday, 8:30 p.m.

4.) Dougherty......................................................11-6

The Trojans end the season at No. 4 with signature wins against Westover and Albany as they enter the region tourney having won 3 of 4. Next: Region 1-AAA tourney, vs. Americus, today, 8:30 p.m.

5.) Westover .... .................................................17-10

A stunning loss by No. 4 DWS -- and a huge win for WHS over previous No. 1 Monroe -- puts the Pats back in the Top 5 to end the year. Next: vs. Region 1-AAA tournament, vs. Crisp or Cairo, Thursday, 8:30 p.m.

-----------------------------

GIRLS:

1.) Westover ........................................................22-3

The Lady Pats left no doubt that, when healthy, they're the area's best girls program as they enter the region tourney as the No. 1 seed. Next: Region 1-AAA tournament, vs. Monroe or Crisp, Thursday, 7 p.m.

2.) Bainbridge ................................................19-5

No. 2 Americus, which lost to No. 1 Westover on Friday, is leapfrogged this week by Bainbridge, winners of 11 straight. Next: Region 1-AAA tournament, vs. Northside Columbus, today, 8:30 p.m.

3.) Americus-Sumter...................................................19-5

The Lady Panthers end the season at No. 3 after sitting at No. 2 for all but one week this year -- and that one week they were No. 1. Next: Region 1-AAA tournament, vs. Cairo or Dougherty, Thursday, 4 p.m.

4.) Dougherty................................................................15-6

The Lady Trojans hold down the No. 4 spot after going 1-1 in the final week, with that loss coming in to narrow defeat to No. 3 Americus. Next: vs. Region 1-AAA tournament, vs. Cairo, today, 7 p.m.

5.) Pelham ..................................................................19-6

One week after being dropped in favor of Lee, Pelham is back after closing with a region title and Lee faltering. Next: Region 1-A tournament, vs. TBD, Wednesday, 8:30 p.m.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK:

"We can always count on coach Scott to give us a motivational speech. We had been a little flat in practice this week, but after I read to the players what he said in the Americus Times-Recorder (Thursday before the game), I didn't have to say much -- hardly anything at all. He thinks they have five better athletes. I thought we had five better basketball players."

--- Gordy Gruhl

DWS boys coach on pregame comments by Southland coach Ernest Scott, whose team then went out and lost to DWS, 59-29
