SHELLMAN, Ga. -- The Georgia State Patrol's Cuthbert office said two people died and five were injured in a head-on collision between a SUV and an automobile Sunday morning around 7:00 on Highway 82 in Randolph County just outside of Shellman.
According to the troopers an SUV driven by Seaborn J. Johnson, 48, of Cuthbert crossed the centerline and slammed head-on into a Mercury Grand Marquis driven by 24-year-old Christopher Lehr of Georgetown. Lehr, as well as his wife, Sandra Lehr, died on impact.
The Lehr vehicle also held four people in the back seat. All four, three juveniles and Billy Ray Brown, 54, of Georgetown suffered critical injuries. Brown and one of the juveniles were airlifted to Dothan while the remaining two juveniles were transported to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital.
Johnson was also transported to Phoebe.
All five surviving victims remain hospitalized as of this writing.
Troopers said the couple had been wearing seatbelts, but the back seat passengers were not.
No charges have been filed at this time, but troopers say fog might have been a factor.
The GSP Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team (SCRT) is currently investingating the accident.
