ALBANY, Ga. -- The 2010 debutantes were recently presented at the Charity League's annual Debutante Ball at Hilton Garden Inn.
The festivities marked the 50th anniversary of the Albany Debutante Ball, which is sponsored by the Charity League of Albany. The first Debutante Ball was conducted in 1961 at Radium Springs Casino, where 24 debutantes were introduced to society after learning about their community and the role of a volunteer.
Since the inception of the Debutante Club in 1961, the Charity League of Albany has sponsored the presentation of 1,082 young women.
This year's group of 26 debutantes was spotlighted at the annual ball, as were their accomplishments. Each debutante was recognized for her participation in at least 20 hours of volunteer work in the community.
The Deb club also sponsored an annual golf tournament and donated proceeds of $4,340, which was divided among four charities. The charities are Children's Miracle Network, Liberty House, The Anchorage and the Lily Pad.
In addition to the proceeds from the charity ball, which are donated annually by The Charity League to local charities, over the past three years the Albany Debutante Clubs have given more than $50,000 to various local nonprofit organizations by hosting their annual golf tournament, Birdies for Charity.
