APD officer involved in earlier incident

ALBANY -- An Albany Police Department spokeswoman has confirmed that an officer who was arrested for discharging a firearm just after midnight Saturday in Lee County was also involved in a taser incident in 2008.

APD Officer Grady Rachel Jr., 28, was arrested by Lee County sheriff's deputies for discharging a firearm in a subdivision and disorderly conduct early Saturday. He was released on a $1,000 bond and has been suspended with pay pending the conclusion of an internal affairs investigation.

In June 2008, the same officer faced suspension after being caught using his taser inappropriately. Rachel brought the device to police officials claiming it was malfunctioning. The taser was examined, and during the investigation into the incident, video evidence surfaced that he had pointed the laser-sight weapon in a non-threatening fashion.

APD officials also said at the time that there was no evidence to suggest the device was actually deployed or that anyone felt threatened, but that it was used in a playing manner.
