Brick-throwing suspect nabbed

ALBANY -- Albany Police have arrested Bertram Derek Stewart on charges of tossing bricks through the windows of a van last month, injuring Jaleen Stevens, a 9-year-old Albany boy.

Police put Stewart in Dougherty County Jail Thursday in connection with the violent outburst, a jail spokeswoman said.

Stewart is charged with five counts of terroristic threats and one count of reckless behavior, she said. Bail has been set at $9,000 for those charges.

He also has charges of failure to appear in court and city probation violation against him that have no bail set, added the jail spokeswoman.

"The driver of the van (Alecia Whitlock) was traveling east on Leonard Avenue when her Dodge Sport Caravan was struck by two bricks.

One shattered her driver's side window and the second shattered her back window," said Phyllis Banks, police spokeswoman. "During the incident a 9-year-old male juvenile was struck with one of the bricks. There were four juveniles in the van at the time of the incident."

Stevens was treated at the scene by Dougherty County Emergency Medical Services personnel and released the same day.
