ALBANY-- All they needed was a diamond. They could have split up sides and played a six-on-six baseball game Saturday afternoon right there at Darton, where the Cavaliers signed a dozen players to scholarships.

The Darton Dozen consists of players from all around Georgia and includes six pitchers and a local player from Southwest Georgia.

Samuel Buczek, a middle infielder from Seminole County, was the only local player to sign with the Cavaliers on Saturday.

"I like it,'' Buczek said of the big group all coming into Darton on one day. "We can start building the camaraderie as future teammates right away.''

Buczek, who plays second base shortstop and third, hit .420, belted five home runs and drove in 48 runs for Seminole County last year as a junior. He said signing with Darton was an easy choice.

"It's the best fit for me,'' he said. "I like the coaches and I like the feel of the school. It's a small campus and I can come here and get a couple of years under my belt.''

Buczek has yet to decide on his major, but he brings a 3.9 GPA with him to college, which makes his a perfect fit for this signing class. This is not only the largest class Darton has signed at one time, but the smartest.

"It's a great group,'' Darton baseball coach Glenn Eames said. "I see a bright future in the next two years with this group. They are not only good players, but they are very good students. This is the highest GPA (as a group) we have ever had in a recruiting class. All of them have well over a 3.0.''

Eames has recruited a dozen players before but he's never had them together at the same time.

"This (Saturday) is the first day you can sign players and it just worked out for us, and we were able to get everybody to come in today,'' Eames said. "We've had 12 recruits before but never had 12 come in and sign the same day.''

Buczek had the shortest drive, but everyone was glad to be there.

The rest of Darton's big haul came from around the Peach State and consists of catcher Tripp Calhoun (Dacula High School, Dacula), shortstops Cody Wofford (Ola High School, McDonough) and Logan Pethel (Johnson High School, Flowery Branch), outfielders Neal Gandee (Ola High School) and Kenny Katzman (Savannah Christian, Richmond Hill) and pitchers A.J. Sunstrom (Ola High School), Ryan Lemonds (Pitcher/3B, Monroe Area High School, Monroe), Blake Cannon (Ware County High School, Waycross), Taylor Patterson (Pitcher/Outfield, Murray Co. High School, Chatsworth), Shawn Thomas (Pitcher/Outfield, Brookstone High School, Columbus) and Steven Farris (Pitcher/First Base, Jeff Davis High School, Hazlehurst).
