Lee amends SPLOST resolution

LEESBURG, Ga. -- On a night that the Lee County Commission named its new administrator, the board also tended to clerical work needed on a special tax referendum and approved appointments to a number of committees.

County Attorney Jimmy Skipper told commissioners they needed to revise the wording of a special-purpose local-option sales tax resolution so that if better reflected the language of the SPLOST agreement approved by the board in December.

"It's nothing new really," Skipper said. "The amended resolution contains the language of the actual ballot. It just has additional information for the public."

The commission voted 3-1 to amend the resolution. Commissioner Dennis Roland, who had voted against the SPLOST referendum in December because he was opposed to the county borrowing money against proposed special tax collections, again voted against the measure Tuesday.

The commission also voted to appoint Jenny Crisp and Glenda Battle to the Southwest Georgia Regional Commission Board; Chris Guarnieri (Century District), Jesse Batten (Smithville), William Hancock (Leesburg) and Gloria Thompson (Palmyra) to the county's Planning Commission; and Troy Golden, Frank Richter and Johnny Barthlein to the county Utilities Authority.

County Clerk Christi Dockery alerted the board and public to state legislative updates, including House and Senate appointments, that are now available on the county's website, www.lee.ga.us.

The commission also voted to fund its portion of an intergovernmental agreement with Dougherty County to provide enhanced LiDAR satellite imagery of land in south Lee County; approved a resolution to partner with the Georgia Department of Revenue to ensure proper sales tax payment; agreed to amend the budget to include Christmas gift cards for employees; OK'd consultant Bob Robertson to submit applications for HUD-sponsored Community Development Block Grants; and amended the county's Code of Ordinances to set opening and closing hours for the county courthouse and county offices.
