Doerun boy, 5, killed in accident

TAMPA, Fla. -- A 5-year-old Doerun boy was struck by a vehicle and killed Monday while his family was vacationing in Florida, officials say.

Cameron Lewis was struck by a Mitsubishi SUV near the gas pumps at the GasKwik convenience store at 1501 E. Fowler Drive in Tampa around 3 p.m. Monday, Tampa Police Public Information officer Janelle McGregor said.

Police believe that Cameron had exited the vehicle he was riding in as it was being fueled to go inside the store, and that he walked behind the SUV, which was at another gas pump and being driven by Chavillia M. Jefferson.

Jefferson, who told police she didn't see Cameron, began backing up and struck him. Cameron was taken to Tampa General Hospital where he later died, McGregor said.

McGregor called the incident a terrible and unfortunate accident.

"It doesn't look like there's going to be any charges. It was just a very unfortunate accident," McGregor said.
