DAMASCUS, Ga. -- A body was found at a residence on Georgia Highway 45 in Early County, and may be that of an elderly woman who was living there.
At 8 a.m. on Sunday, Willie Shorter came to the Early County Sheriff's Office to report a strange smell at his residence on the 6800 block of Georgia Highway 45, which turned out to be a decomposing body.
"He requested law enforcement come to his residence to investigate the odor," a news release sent by Georgia Bureau of Investigation Special-Agent-in-Charge Kim Baker stated. "Early County (Sheriff's Office) responded to the residence on Highway 45 and located what appeared to be a deceased body."
The GBI Sylvester Office was called in to assist with the investigation. The remains were sent to the GBI's crime lab for an autopsy and positive identification.
The investigation continues. When contacted by The Albany Herald on Tuesday, Baker said she was unsure when positive identification could be determined.
Doris Shorter, an elderly black female, was reported missing from her residence on June 11 by members of her family. Her whereabouts have not been confirmed.
