ALBANY, Ga. -- The Albany Police Department made an arrest in connection to an aggravated assault incident that took place last month.

Tracy Lashawn Smith was arrested by authorities Monday evening in connection to the beating of 45-year-old Jerome Benjamin Walden on June 24.

Smith is being held on charges of aggravated assault and battery.

Walden remains hospitalized as a result of his injuries from the attack.

"Walden was being chased by five people in a back alley and beaten with a board," said Phyllis Banks, spokeswoman for the APD.

The initial police report indicated that the attack happened on the 1200 block of a West Highland Avenue alley. Police responded to a man down, and found Walden unconscious. Witnesses said he was beaten by the suspects after having been chased through a house.

He was treated at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital for swollen eyes, head and chest abrasions -- including a punctured lung -- and possible broken ribs and head trauma. A day after the attack he was listed in fair condition at Phoebe.

An update on his condition was not available Tuesday afternoon.
