TIFTON, Ga. -- Darlene Pilcher, a painter from Tifton, will be the featured artist from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday at the "Second Saturdays" series at the Georgia Museum of Agriculture and Historic Village at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.
"We are excited to have a member of the Tifton community as one of our featured artists," Polly Huff, gallery coordinator from the ABAC Arts Connection, said of Pilcher, who will display and talk about her art at the Museum Gallery.
Pilcher loved art from a young age and became an artist through a non-traditional path. While her children were in high school, she became a friend with commercial artist Sylvia E. Boyd. Boyd saw the artistic talent Pilcher had long before she realized it.
For more than 12 years, Pilcher studied and worked weekly under Boyd, who shared her knowledge and passion about art. Pilcher's work included charcoal, pastels and watercolors. She concentrated on the basics required to create art.
Pilcher has also studied oil painting under Vincent Keesee and watercolors with Lian Zhen, Pat Weaver, Frank Webb, Joye Moon and Suzanne Winton. Pilcher also attends workshops by a variety of professional artists on an annual basis.
Pilcher creates mostly in watercolor but also enjoys using and experimenting with a variety of mediums in her home studio. Her subject matter varies from landscapes, abstracts, florals and portraits.
Future "Second Saturdays" events will feature glass artist Tadashi Torii of Sandy Springs and groups of wool spinners, quilters, woodturners and painters later this year.
