AMERICUS -- Try to imagine the strength it would take to pull a tractor trailer truck.
That's what competitors will be doing -- and more -- when they compete in the 2011 Strongman Competition at Southwest Georgia Fitness today, which will include a fitness fair from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
SWGA co-owner Buck Kinney competed six years in strongman competitions, and he said this year's event -- the 3rd annual -- will be as tough as ever. The Strongman Competition will run from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.
The participation and crowd has increased each year. It had six competitors last year, and Kinney said the crowd consisted of roughly 300.
He hopes for a lot more this year.
"The bigger the crowd, the more we get out of the guys," Kinney said. "The crowds have been very vocal, especially last year. It was a really good atmosphere."
Ryan Bushey is the two-time defending champion in the event. It came down to the final event last year during which Bushey edged fellow competitor Luke Bryan by one point.
"They were neck and neck," Kinney said. "Luke got fourth in a medley, and that was the difference. Ryan has been brutally consistent. I expect this year to be as close as it was last year, whether we have three competing or more. They're all really close."
As of Friday, three competitors had signed up, including Bushey (age 30, 6-foot, 260 pounds), Bryan (22, 5-7, 235) and Vincent Dodson (22, 6-1, 245). Dodson competed last year for the first time and finished fourth. He got stronger as the event went along, and Kinney expects to have a bigger showing.
This year's events include a truck pull with a tractor trailer and an over hand truck pull. Medleys will include: Tire flip, carry and load, over press, farmer's walk, sled drag and sled push.
The over hand truck pull is a new event which will feature competitors pulling a van or truck from a starting point toward the competitor with a rope from a seated row position, like a tug of war with a truck, according to Kinney.
SWGA will also have giveaways and drawings for T-shirts and memberships, as well as a one-day membership special.
Roman Oven food will be available from its "healthy choice" menu starting around noon, and Sheridan Edwards from GNC will have a booth setup with information, free samples and representatives from one of her workout supplement vendors.
