ALBANY, Ga. — A surprise visit to an Albany funeral home and its owner’s residence could lead to an investigation by multiple agencies.

Albany Police Department officers went to John Litman’s home and his J.L. Litman Funeral Home business at 1202 Clark Ave. on Monday to search financial transaction records, said Phyllis Banks, police spokeswoman.

“It is very early in the investigation, but we plan to coordinate an investigation with the secretary of state, the GBI (Georgia Bureau of Investigation) and the District Attorney’s Office,” Banks said. “The Secretary of State’s Office is in charge of funeral home regulation.”

District Attorney Greg Edwards said he couldn’t talk about the investigation. A phone call to the Litman business was met with a hang-up Tuesday night.

A representative of the GBI said the organization had not been contacted about the investigation.
