ALBANY -- The 14th annual Challenge Cup tees off today at Doublegate Country Club with the four private area golf clubs vying for bragging rights for the next 365 days.
The defending champion is River Pointe Golf Club, which will try to win it for the fourth time since the event was first held in 1998. The other clubs competing are Doublegate -- which has won only once -- Grand Island Club (two-time winners) and the most successful club in Challenge Cup history, Stonebridge Golf & Country Club (seven titles). The action tees off at 1 p.m. today and the format is for each club to bring one pro and its top 11 players to compete in the two-round tournament.
The pro representing River Pointe is former PGA Tour and current Champions Tour golfer Sonny Skinner, while playing for Doublegate is head pro Ed Everett. Grand Island's representative will be teaching pro Roy Steinberg and Stonebridge will be led by head pro Rob Allen.
