APD: Motel robber caught within minutes

ALBANY -- A threatening man robbed a motel clerk about 4:10 a.m. Friday. Twenty minutes later, police officers cuffed him, according to Albany Police Department reports.

A masked man walked up to the Sleep Inn's front desk at 1525 Dawson Road, threatened the clerk as if he carried a gun, demanded money and fled in a black SUV with an undetermined amount from the register, the report stated.

According to the report, police stopped Christian Kline McCargo, 29, in a black SUV on the 900 block of West Oglethorpe Boulevard, about 1.6 mile from the Sleep Inn.

He was placed under arrest, taken to the Law Enforcement Center and questioned, APD spokeswoman Phyllis Banks said. After questioning McCargo, police charged him with armed robbery and obstruction of an officer for the Friday robbery.

"They are trying to determine if he had a gun or not," Banks said. "But he threatened the clerk as if he had one."

Albany police weren't finished. The investigation led to another armed robbery charge for McCargo, stemming from a July 7 South Slappey Boulevard Sonic restaurant robbery, Banks said.

At the restaurant "an undetermined amount of cash was taken from the business after the suspect displayed a knife," she added.

McCargo was also charged with a Wednesday theft by taking from the same Sleep Inn, Banks said. During that theft, McCargo took cash and an employee's laptop computer.
