However Andres Behring Breivik sees himself, he is one thing and one thing only:
A callous mass murderer.
On Friday, Breivik set off a bomb at the Norwegian government's headquarters in Oslo that killed eight people. Then, dressed in a uniform, he went to an island near the capital under the pretense, according to some reports, of helping the political youth group there come to terms with the bombing event. Instead, Breivik opened fire on the young people, killing 68 in the hour and a half it took police to get there.
Breivik has admitted to the heinous acts and has stated that he expects to spend the rest of his life in prison. Norway has no death penalty and its maximum sentence for any crime is 21 years, but judges also have the ability to extend a sentence 20-year sentence an indefinite number of times for prisoners deemed to dangerous to be free in society.
There is no defense for these shootings and the bombing, which call for a death penalty if any crime ever has. Breivik claims he was trying to bring attention to the loss of Norway's indigenous culture and that he hoped to inspire a revolution in which Norwegians would rise up and throw out Muslims who have moved there.
Breivik also mentioned two other "cells" in a network of anti-Islamic activists modeled as a new version of the Knights Templar, who protected Christians in the Holy Land centuries ago.
If a network that shares Breivik's psychotic views does exist -- and it's yet to be confirmed as anything more than the ramblings of a mad man -- it is just as dangerous as the extremist Islamic groups like al-Qaeda that have kept the world in upheaval for years now.
The fact is, anyone who slaughters innocent people to push his or her political or religious agenda is no real Christian and no real Muslim. That individual is simply a murderer who has found an outlet for his or her hatred and contempt, along with an errant rationale for unleashing those evil leanings in a violent, deadly manner.
These fiends are not following the teachings of Christ, Mohammed or any other religious figure for that matter. They are giving in to their own sick desires with no concern about the pain and suffering they cause others.
Anyone "inspired" by the likes of Breivik, Fort Hood shooter Nidal Malik Hasan, Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh or 9/11 mastermind Osama bin Laden to take up arms to maim and kill innocent people is a criminal thug, nothing more. Like cancer has no place in the body, these criminals have no place in society and should be dealt with as quickly and severely as possible.
If anything needs "retaking," it's our right to live our lives without fear of attack from violent malcontents who hide their hatred behind pretenses of faith and love of country.
