DCP investigate Putney shooting

PUTNEY -- Dougherty County Police said two black males lured a Hispanic couple to a house on the 4200 block of Hardaway Road Tuesday where one of the black males shot Juan Pena, 33, then stole the couple's 2004 Black Hummer.

DCP Capt. Jimmy Sexton said the black males had broken into the empty house earlier and had encountered Pena and his girlfriend at a convenience store. The assailants approached the couple and asked if they were interested in work at the home, with the actual intent of stealing the Hummer.

Pena and his girlfriend, whom police did not identify, had borrowed the vehicle from friends in Jonesboro and had driven to Dougherty County in search of work.

The couple followed the two men to the home on Hardaway, where one of the males went in through the front door of the residence. Pena went around to the back of the house, and one of the assailants fired one shot through the rear screen door, striking Pena in the side.

Sexton said the assailant fired two more shots at Pena from outside the house, but missed.

The assailants then jumped into the Hummer and drove away when Pena's girlfriend ran to a nearby house for assistance.

Sexton said the Hummer was later recovered a mile from the crime scene.

Pena was transported to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital and was reported to be doing well after surgery.

Sexton said Pena's girlfriend did not speak English, but through a translator said one of the assailants was wearing a white T-shirt, jeans and a red ball cap.

Dougherty County Police are still searching for the suspects.
