Benefit performance for Liberty House

ALBANY -- The Albany State University's Women's Symposium and the Darton College Theater Program have joined forces to present "The Vagina Monologues."

Performances are planned at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday at Darton College Theater and 3 p.m. on Sunday at Albany State University, ACAD auditorium.

The event is an effort to combat domestic violence locally and to support the work of V-Day nationally. V-Day is a catalyst that promotes creative events to increase awareness, raise money and revitalize the spirit of existing anti-violence organizations. V-Day generates broader attention for the fight to stop violence against women and girls.

The performance is hilarious and touching. It will also include a spotlight film on the plight of women in post-earthquake Haiti.

"I consider it a privilege to have Darton College and Albany State University partnering together to have this V-Day event to raise awareness and funds for Liberty House," said Silke Deeley, executive director of Liberty House of Albany. "It is a great challenge to people's way of thinking to produce "The Vagina Monologues" and let people hear real stories based on real women and their experiences. This play allows women to know they are not alone, and helps those who have experienced violence to heal."

This years performance is one of hundreds going on across the country through April as a part of the work of V-Day. Profits from the local performances will go to The Liberty House, which provides comprehensive services for domestic violence victims, their children, families, and friends in 17 counties.
