ALBANY, Ga. -- As many as 500 competitors are expected when the first Jim Laue BMX State Qualifying races get under way Saturday at Chehaw.
The event, the first of five state qualifying races for the Georgia BMX Championship Series, is named after Cycle World owner Jim Laue, who died last October.
"Jim was a big part of making this track happen," event organizer Tommy Knight said. "He was out here digging in the dirt with us right from the start. We just want to do something to honor his memory."
Laue was owner of Cycle World of Albany for more than 30 years. An avid cyclist, he was a finalist in the National Senior Olympics and an early member of the Pecan City Pedalers Bicycle Club.
The event, which organizers plan to make an annual race, will begin at 9 a.m. with a Black Crown Clinic, which costs $30. Practice and registration will be held from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., with racing getting under way at 2 p.m.
After the qualifying races, the day will culminate in a National Bicycle League/Bob Warnicke Scholarship Opportunity Race.
The NBL/Bob Warnicke Memorial Scholarship Fund was created to assist students and their families in meeting the costs of undergraduate college education, trade school and other educational opportunities.
