ALBANY, Ga. -- A 19-month-old girl suffered beatings so severe at the hands of her mother's boyfriend that her internal organs hemorrhaged, Dougherty Judicial Circuit District Attorney Greg Edwards said Tuesday.

Janaysia Arnoney Stevenson was dead on arrival at Phoebe Putney Memorial's emergency room Monday, Edwards added.

"This child suffered multiple, blunt-force trauma since February until she died," Edwards said. "The preliminary autopsy revealed chronic abuse. This case would bring anybody to tears."

Gregory Keith Evans, 28, and Chaitia Stevenson, 20, were charged with felony murder, multiple counts of aggravated assault and cruelty to Janaysia, Edwards said.

"The death penalty is not off the table," Edwards added.

Stevenson was a witness and allowed the beatings to continue: "For that reason the state will be prosecuting her fully for her involvement in allowing these activities to go on for the period of time that it did," Edwards said.

Evans was living with Stevenson at 2806 Sands Drive but was not the child's father, Edwards said. He did not release any information on the child's biological father.

Stevenson has another child, who has been placed with the Department of Family and Children Services, Edwards said. An autopsy will be completed to find the cause of death, Edwards added.

Edwards also complemented the Family Protection Unit of the Albany Police Department for its "professional and expeditious investigation" of the case.

Edwards said, "The main point of the case illustrates that we as a society must make sure that young women always understand that the child is more important than any relationship they might have with any man."
