ALBANY, Ga. -- It won't be on the showroom floor until September, but Albany got a quick peek at the 2011 Motor Trend magazine Car of the Year on Thursday evening -- the Chevrolet Volt.
The Volt electric car made its first appearance at Prince Chevrolet on South Slappey Boulevard. Buddy Carver, Prince's general manager, said the electric-powered car will be on the lot late this summer.
"We'll be getting them in our inventory probably in September," Carver said. "You can get 40 miles on the battery alone."
The hybrid car was brought to the showroom by Jim Russell, district sales manager for south Georgia. He said he wanted everyone at all 15 of the dealerships he manages to get a look at the future and learn about it.
"I've got this Volt for a week. I wanted to take it to all my dealerships," Russell said. "It has a 1.4-liter gas engine that powers the generator that runs the car after the battery is done at 40 miles."
According to the Chevrolet website, the Volt will retail as low as $32,780.
Media in Detroit reported this week that General Motors officials were expected to announce today that GM will spend $100 million in two Michigan plants to increase engine production for the Volt and the company's top-selling compact car, the Cruze.
