ALBANY, Ga. -- The Georgia State Patrol post in Albany confirmed that there was one traffic fatality in the Metro Albany area during the holiday weekend.
Willie B. Edison Jr., 45, died Sunday afternoon in Baker County after the motorcycle he was operating was involved in a collision.
"A motorcycle and a car backing up from a private driveway (collided)," said Sgt. Eddie Edwards, GSP Albany post commander, of the crash.
The accident took place on Hawkinstown Road. Edison was fatality injured, while his passenger received serious injuries, Edwards said.
There were no further details made available Tuesday regarding the circumstances of the crash. The GSP Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team from Valdosta was brought in to assist in the investigation.
The accident remains under investigation.
Edison was one of 15 people to die on a Georgia road during the Memorial Day weekend, which ran from 6 p.m. Friday to midnight on Monday. Twelve of those fatalities were from incidents being investigated by a GSP post.
Last year, there were five traffic deaths in the state during the Memorial Day weekend. This year, GSP posts were called in to investigate 273 crashes.
Of those 273 crashes, there were 177 injuries reported. This is compared to a total of 2,143 crashes last year, which resulted in 945 injuries.
