Darton men's golf coach Bill Jones has enjoyed quite a bit of success in his first year at the helm.
ALEXANDER CITY, ALA. -- The Darton golf team shot a 4-over par 292 in Monday's opening round of the Central Alabama Community College Invitational, but things could have been much worse for the No. 5 nationally ranked Cavs.
"The biggest thing was that three of our guys are sick," Darton coach Bill Jones III said. "I don't know if I started it or if they started it, but I am sick with them."
The ailing Cavs still managed to finish Day 1 of the two-day tournament in third place, nine shots behind leader Central Alabama and two shots behind Meridian Community College, which is the No. 1 ranked junior college team in the country.
Playing at Willow Point Country Club, Darton sophomore Joe Sakulpolphaisan led the Cavs with a 2-under 70, which is tied for second place. Also scoring for Darton were Austin McNeill 73, Chase Jones 74, Jonathan Howard 75 and Shad Tuten 77.
"We just have to get off to a little better start," Jones said. "Tomorrow we should see some low scores, and if we play well we can put some pressure on the leaders. You can't count us out on this golf course."
In last year's District Tournament at Willow Point Country Club, the Cavs shot a 12-under 276 to come from behind and win the tournament.
