Early voting period ends Friday; turnout sluggish, officials say

All precincts will be open Tuesday.

— ALBANY -- With the early voting period drawing to a close and the spectre of a municipal election looming, elections officials say turnout has been light.

With two days left in the three-week Early Voting Period, early voting numbers show that roughly two percent of registered voters in Dougherty County have cast ballots.

Ginger Nickerson, the head of the Dougherty County Elections office, said Wednesday that barely 1,000 voters had passed through the office as of Wednesday at noon. There are 50,000 registered voters countywide.

The last day to vote early is Friday. The poll at the downtown Government Center at 222 Pine Avenue will be open from 8:30 to 5 p.m.

All precincts countywide will be open Tuesday, November 8.

While the headliner for the 2011 election cycle is arguably the mayor's race in which B.J. Fletcher, Dorothy Hubbard and John White are each campaigning to replace Albany Mayor Willie Adams who will turn over the gavel when his term ends in December, voters in wards II, IV and VI each have contested races.

In addition to the mayor's race, all voters who live within the city limits will also have the opportunity to vote on a referendum to decide whether retail stores can sell packaged alcohol on Sundays beginning at 12:30 p.m.

Voters who live in the unincorporated area of Dougherty County, as well as those within the city limits, will vote on whether to renew a one-percent sales tax to benefit the Dougherty County School System.

If you don't vote, you have no right to complain about the direction that Albany is headed. It takes 5 minutes--just do it!

My grandpa used to tell me the same thing about voting (If you don't vote, you have no right to complain.) when I was growing up. I also agree about how long it takes, I was in and out of there in less than 5 minutes.
