SYLVESTER -- One of the men accused in the death of an Albany Police Department officer confessed to gang involvement and a robbery in Sylvester, a police official said.
According to Ronnie Graddy, an investigator with the Sylvester Police Department, Wesley Martavi Wilkerson, 22, confessed to robbing a loan company in Sylvester Oct. 28 as part of his gang initiation.
The name of the gang Wilkerson confessed he was joining was not available, Graddy said. Sylvester police continue to search for another man involved in the robbery in their jurisdiction.
On Friday Wilkerson and Kentrell Bernard Butler were arrested and charged with robbing the Consolidated Finance Company on the 400 block of Pine Avenue.
Wilkerson and Butler led several police cruisers on a chase through East Albany as they fled the robbery scene. Two Albany patrol cars collided during the pursuit at the intersection of Blaylock Street and Society Avenue. Officer Terry Lewis-Flemming was killed in the crash.
District Attorney Greg Edwards charged Wilkerson and Butler with felony murder, armed robbery, three counts of aggravated assault, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and other charges. They remain in the Dougherty County Jail.
