Gang unit investigating firearm incident

ALBANY, Ga. — The Albany Police Department Gang Unit was called in to investigate a report of a juvenile discharging a firearm in his bedroom.

The incident took place just before 3 p.m. Saturday on the 1500 block of West Highland Avenue. According to the report, the 16-year-old discharged the firearm inside his bedroom and left the area with the gun.

"The mother heard a loud sound," said APD spokeswoman Phyllis Banks said. "The teen denied having a weapon, but the mother stated that he did indeed have a weapon."

After the encounter with his mother, the teen took the gun and ran off with it. Information available on the incident Monday evening indicated that authorities are still trying to locate the teen as well as the gun.

The gang unit was called in to investigate the matter due the possibility that the teen may be involved in a gang, Banks said.

The unit is called when tactical work directed toward the suppression of criminal gang activities in the city is considered crucial. Its job is to investigate gang-related crimes, educate the public on gang activity, penetrate and dismantle illegal gang activities and target specific criminal enterprises to eliminate gang power and influence.
