ALBANY — Led by Sabrina Garcia, the Albany State University Lady Rams moved into the winners’ bracket of the SIAC Conference Volleyball Tournament, beating Stillman College 3-1 Monday afternoon at the ASU HPER Gymnasium.

Garcia recorded 18 kills, two assists and one dig as the Lady Rams won 25-17, lost 25-18, and won the last two sets 25-18 and 25-20, respectively.

“Being that this is my last year, I did not want to lose,” Garcia said. “The team feeds off of me so if I am down they are down and if I am up then they are up.”

The Lady Rams (17-12, 13,5) beat Tuskegee earlier in the day 3-1. The win against Stillman (18-16, 11,7) puts them in a comfortable position to play Clafin University this afternoon.

“After playing two games (Monday) and not having to play (Tuesday) morning, we have an opportunity to rest,” Albany State head coach Robert Skinner said.

Adrienne Morris led the Lady Rams’ defense with 21 digs. Jennifer Johnson added eight digs to go along with a team-high 38 assists.

“I’m pleased because a win is a win, but we made a lot of mistakes that we need to learn from,” Johnson said. “If we pick up our serves and do a better job of communicating we will be fine.”

Stillman now falls into the loser’s bracket after winning only the second set.

“I think it was two evenly matched teams but we just missed too many blocks,” Stillman head coach Pam Phillips said. “We seemed to play to keep from getting beat instead of playing to win, and there’s a big difference in that.”

ASU’s Sharme Ridley finished second on the team with 13 kills while Amber Gatlin recorded nine kills. Ridley and Desiree Hardy had seven digs apiece.

The Lady Rams will play Clafin at 4 p.m today at the ASU HPER Gymnasium.
