Evan Mobley scored five points Tuesday night to reach the 1,000-point club for Georgia Southwestern during the season-opening win against Trinity Baptist.

AMERICUS -- The No. 18 nationally Georgia Southwestern men's basketball team opened its 2011-12 season with a convincing 78-46 victory against Trinity Baptist on Tuesday evening in the Storm Dome.

"I thought we played well. We did a good job sharing the ball -- had 21 assists on 32 baskets," GSW coach Mike Leeder said. "We didn't look real fluid offensively, but everyone contributed and now we have some confidence heading into our next game (Saturday at West Florida)."

In a game where the 'Canes led wire-to-wire, the main story ended up being Evan Mobley who made school history by joining the 1,000-point club after his eight-point performance.

Mobley, a four-year starter for the Hurricanes, entered Tuesday with 995 career points. Mobley broke the magic mark with 5:45 remaining in the game. He tacked on a 3-pointer two minutes later before exiting the ballgame.

GSW opened the season with an 8-0 run and led Trinity by as many as 20 points (34-14) before the halftime break. The Hurricanes' biggest lead came in the second half when the margin ballooned to 76-40.

The Blue & Gold shot a sizzling 60.4 percent (32-of-53) from the floor, while holding Trinity to 30.9 percent on 17-of-55 shooting. GSW outrebounded the Tigers 44-21.

Reigning Peach Belt Player of the Year and preseason All-American selection Phillip Brown led the Hurricanes with 25 points, while 6-foot-10 Milos Kleut added 14 on 6-for-6 shooting from the floor and 2-for-3 from the foul line.

"Milos did great for us," Leeeder said of the first-year Hurricane forward.

Marlon Rivera added six points, five rebounds and five assists.

GSW (1-0) faces unbeaten West Florida on Saturday at 3 p.m.
