Marietta, Howard support Hubbard for Albany mayor

ALBANY -- Two recently re-elected Albany City Commissioners publicly endorsed former Ward II Commissioner Dorothy Hubbard in her bid to become Albany's next mayor.

The endorsements came during a press conference Tuesday morning at Hubbard's headquarters on West Broad Avenue.

"Sitting on the commission with her, I've seen her work in pushing the gang unit and getting behind 311 and the code red system and think she'll bring her knowledge of the city with her to the office if elected," Ward IV Commissioner and Mayor Pro Tem Roger Marietta said.

Marietta, who won re-election to his Ward IV seat Nov. 8, said Hubbard showed during her time as mayor pro-tem -- the commissioner who runs commission meetings in the absence of the mayor -- that she's prepared to take charge of the board and can keep the meetings under control.

Hubbard is locked in a runoff with local restaurateur B.J. Fletcher after neither of the two managed to get the 50 percent plus one vote necessary to win the seat in the Nov. 8 general election.

Fletcher took the majority of the 13,000 ballots cast in the race, roughly 40 percent of the vote, with Hubbard pulling in roughly 36 percent.

Howard and Marietta join outgoing Mayor Willie Adams in endorsing Hubbard for the city's top spot.

"She's a consensus-builder who has the personality and character to work with any group or person in the community," Adams said in an interview before the Nov. 8 general election. "And, during her time on the commission, she's proven that on various issues ... we're making positive traction in this community. I believe she can grow and build on that."

Did you get too many comments to list or did the comments not agree with your position?

Some more back scratching, gotta love it. Some people don't want a change, they'll have to get their hand out of the tax payers pocket, and get a real job.

Now if she was incapable of straightening things out when she was a Commisioner, incapable of getting folks to work for the common good, and just incapable as to any leadership. What makes you think she will make a Mayor that can provide the leadership this City so despirately needs?

BJ Fletcher is a breath of fresh air in an overused restroom. Give her a chance to show what she can do for Government. Hopefully at least as well as she has done for the Restayrant.

Hubbard is just more of the same old, same old. One thing you can be sure of it that Albany will continue its demise and 25 years from now it will be a ghost town. I will quote Bill Cosby, I am glad that I am at the end of my life, not at the beginning. It is heartbreaking to see what Albany has become. It is a good example of the Peter Principal. Under qualified folks trying to govern a town.

The commissioners that are staying in office really should not endorse anyone. It is just plain tacky. It really makes them look bad and what if the other person wins. That is not going to help get things off on the right foot if BJ is elected.

These endorsements are extremely disappointing. I think the commissioners what somebody they know will be "nice" but in reality will be a pushover for all the bigshot "entities" that want to control how the money gets disbursed in this town. BJ will do what's right no matter who you are. And there's a lot of cleaning house that's needed and BJ is the right person for the job!!

Slick Willie endorsed Hubbard, Enough said. We know he did nothing in his years as mayor.

I had never looked it that way, but endorsements should not be done in a small scale elections. It influences and kinda like buying votes. Of course that has been done too in Albany. Henry Something Mathis went to prison for it. If Obama or another big politician will not influence the votes like small town Albany where you can only win by a few votes.

I'm sorry, but I feel I need to come to Mr. Mathis' defense. He was not caught buying votes. He was convicted of trying to extort money from businesses in his ward. That is totally different than buying votes. Besides, the hearsay is he was set up by political enemies and that very well could be the case, but if he is guilty at least he served his time whereas other political criminals in this town have never been caught and tried by a jury to this day. Please don't throw Mr. Mathis into this subject and start accusing him of things he never did.
