LOWNDES -- The Lee County girls basketball team opened its 2011-12 season with a victory Monday night in the Charles Cooper Invitational, which is named after a former Trojans baseball coach.
The Lady Trojans crushed Ware County, 68-33, behind 20 points and nine boards from Herald Super 6er Dequenna Moore, while Bri Scott -- who transferred to Lee County from Westover this offseason -- added 12 and Brandi Blount dropped in eight.
Lee (1-0) returns to action today in the invitational tournament and will face Valdosta, followed by host Lowndes on Wednesday.
DWS GIRLS OPEN SEASON WITH VICTORY: At the Stratford Academy Tip-Off Tournament in Macon on Monday, the Lady Knights downed Mount de Sales, 44-33, behind scoring from Nyla Perry (11 points), Courtney Kelson (10), Sabrina Curry (6 points, 4 assists) and Miranda Phillips (5 points, 5 rebounds)
Next up for the Lady Knights will be John Milledge Academy today at 4 p.m.
TAE GIRLS ROLL SHERWOOD: The Terrell Academy girls' basketball team won the opening game of its own tip-off tournament Monday evening, defeating Sherwood, 57-10.
Leading scorers for Terrell Academy were Brittany Tripp with 12 points, Lauran Barfield with 12 points and Marilauren Farr with 10 points.
Other results from the opening day of the Terrell Academy Tip Off tournament were Tiftarea defeating Randolph Southern, 73-46.
WESTWOOD GIRLS 61, LAKESIDE 49: Miller Singleton scored 20 points, Ivy Foister added 12 and Sydnee Smith dropped in 10 as the Lady Wildcats -- who were state runner-ups a year ago to Crisp Academy -- opened the season with a win at the Terrell Academy Tip-Off. Morgan Singleton and Hope Bailey each added 6.
GATEWOOD GIRLS 51, CRISP ACADEMY 48: Class A defending state champ Crisp got 30 points from Madi Mitchell, but it wasn't enough as the Lady Wildcats fell to 1-2 to start the season.
