ALBANY — The Albany High boys basketball team is off to a 2-0 start after downing city rival Westover on Tuesday at the Albany Civic Center, 71-61.
“It was another good effort,” said AHS coach Archie Chatmon, whose team has now beaten two city rivals, Dougherty and Westover, in its first two games. “(Herald Super 6er) Tim Pierce was solid as usual, Tyrone Culbreth got involved offensively and Larry Sanford played big. It was a good win.”
Westover boys coach Dallis Smith said his team would’ve had a chance to win had it not gone 15-for-33 from the free throw line.
“We’ll be working on that this week,” he said.
The Westover girls, however, won the ladies battle earlier in the night, 43-33.
Westover’s boys and girls returns to action Tuesday against Lee County at Darton, while Albany’s next game will be in two weeks in a rematch with Westover at either ASU or the Civic Center.
WESTWOOD GIRLS 44, TIFTAREA 33: The Westwood Lady Wildcats closed out the Terrell Academy Tip-Off Tournament by finishing 2-0 after Tuesday’s 44-33 win against Tiftarea. Miller Singleton led all scorers with 17 points, followed by 12 from Callie Smith and 6 from Morgan Singleton.
Westwood doesn’t return to action until next Friday when it faces new GISA Region 3-A foe Grace Christian out of Bainbridge.
VALDOSTA GIRLS 67, LEE COUNTY 55: The Lady Trojans moved to 1-1 on the season after missing 24 free throws and committing what coach Fran McPherson called “a disappointing number” of free throws.
Bri Scott led Lee with 14 points, followed by 13 from Herald Super 6er Daquenna Mooore and 8 from Maggie O’Conner.
Lee County closes out the Charles Cooper Invitational today vs. host Lowndes at 6 p.m.
TERRELL ACADEMY GIRLS 77, LAKESIDE 51: Alex Barfield scored a whopping 29 points — but she wasn’t the only Lady Eagle who had a big game.
Marilauren Farr added 19, Maura Milliron scored 14, Alex’s sister, Lauren, added 9, Sarah Bridges added 6 and Olivia Rogers scored 2. TAE next faces region rival Crisp Academy.
DEERFIELD GIRLS 54, JOHN MILLEDGE 38: The Lady Knights are off to a red-hot start, moving to 2-0 and sweeping both its games in the Stratford Tip-Off Tournament.
Nyla Perry scored 13, Courtney Kelson added 11, Sabrina Curry dropped in nine and Gabby Burt had eight. Other top performers included Miranda Phillips (7 points, 7 assists, 5 rebounds) and Heather Lash (5 assists).
