Florrie Foster Whigham

MEMPHIS -- Florrie Foster Whigham passed away peacefully on Friday, November 25, 2011, at her home at the age of 94. Funeral services will be Wednesday, November 30, 2011, at 10:00 AM at Memorial Park Funeral Home with Rev. Tim Olds and Dr. Biff Coker officiating. Interment will be Wednesday afternoon at Evergreen Cemetery in New Madrid, MO.

She was born on February 5, 1917, in Butts County, GA. She attended Griffin High School in Griffin, GA. Florrie later attended Piedmont Hospital School of Nursing in Atlanta, GA, becoming a registered nurse. She moved to Albany, GA, in 1949. Florrie was a charter member of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Albany and was active in Circle activities until moving to Piperton, TN, in November 2009. Her nursing career was short-lived, but she utilized her nursing training for the last 69 years of her life caring for her daughter with cerebral palsy at home. In 2008, she and her husband were honored by the Southwest Georgia Care-Net in affiliation with the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregiving with the Family Caregiver of the Year Award. In addition to her altruism, Florrie was known and loved by all who met her as a wonderful southern cook. She provided abundant toll house cookies, cheese cookies and divinity to many in Albany and Piperton.

She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 72 years, William (Bill) Denny Whigham, Sr; her daughter, Florrie Jean (Jeanie) Whigham ; her son, William (Bill) Denny Whigham, Jr, and daughter-in-law, Amelia Shibley Whigham, all of Piperton, TN; two granddaughters, Dr. E. Ashley Whigham of Collierville, TN, and Dr. Amy S. Whigham of Winston Salem, NC; and her precious great-grandchildren, Bailey Elizabeth Overby and William Reece Overby of Collierville, TN.

The family will receive friends at Memorial Park Funeral Home, 5668 Poplar Avenue, Memphis, TN on Tuesday, November 29, 2011, from 5:30- 8:30 PM.

The family requests that memorials be made to either United Cerebral Palsy or Covenant Presbyterian (Albany, GA) Capital Fund Drive.
