COLUMBUS — The Georgia Southwestern women’s basketball team had a poor second half Sunday against Fort Valley State and lost, 66-61.
The Lady Hurricanes, who brought a program-best six game winning streak into the contest, are now 6-1 .
GSW was led by senior Terra Branch, who scored 18 points on 5-of-8 from the field and grabbed two rebounds. The only one other Hurricane scoring in double digits was senior Jessica Jones, who tallied her first double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
GSW’s lead in the first half grew as big as 11 points, and the Lady Hurricanes took a nine points lead into the locker room at halftime.
However, Fort Valley outscored GSW 36-25 in the second half to improve its record to 1-2.
Georgia Southwestern returns to action Wednesday when it hosts Truett-McConnell College.
LADY RAMS LOSE: The Albany State women’s basketball team is now 0-3 after a 68-49 loss to Columbus State on Sunday afternoon in Columbus.
The Lady Rams were led by Breanna Fields, who finished with 13 points and six rebounds, while Columbus State (4-1) was led in scoring by Dominique Gilbert, who had 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Both teams came out shooting the ball well. ASU’s April Thomas scored the first points of the game with a 3-pointer. The two sides would then exchange buckets until Thomas hit her second 3-pointer in the first five minutes to give the visitors a 12-8 lead, ASU’s largest advantage of the game.
Four straight points by Asha Alexander tied the game before a Fields lay up gave the Lady Rams their final lead of the contest.
From there, Columbus State went on a 14-0 run and never looked back.
Other top scorers for the Lady Rams were Thomas with 10 points, Symone Wilkerson with eight points and Kourtney Alexander with seven points.
