BLAM! Albany D’town Arts Coalition a hit Tuesday

President of the D’town Arts Coalition Cameron Malphrus spoke about the advantages of having a thriving arts scene in the city at a Carnegie Library reception Tuesday.

ALBANY, Ga. — Paintings in downtown Albany attracted a crowd eager to see what the “BLAM! Art Exhibit” offered.

The exhibit began with a 6 p.m. reception in the Carnegie Library Building with paintings and artwork from five local artists. The D’town Arts Coalition hosted the event, which runs through Friday.

“We just thought we’d come downtown and see what these new artists are doing, take a look at their work,” said Paul Smith at the event with his wife, Beverly. “It is interesting that there is so much talent in Albany.”

The exhibit features five painters, said Cameron Malphrus, D’town Arts Coalition president. This event and others planned attract people downtown leading to an atmosphere where business can thrive, he added.

“Events like this are critical to bringing the arts, people and prosperity to Albany,” Malphrus said.

Walking through an elbow to elbow crowd at the reception, B.J. Fletcher, a candidate for mayor opposing Dorothy Hubbard, said she was glad to attend and hoped the arts would thrive in downtown.

“Look at this. It is Tuesday in Albany and this is wall to wall with people,” Fletcher said. “We have teachers, doctors, business people and people with other jobs here. The soul of Albany is alive and well. Art is one of the things that can move us into the 21st century.”
