ALBANY, Ga. — A man died early Sunday after the vehicle he was driving crashed into a vacant apartment and burst into flames, officials with the Albany Police Department said.
The fatal wreck occurred at 1600 Gadsden Drive just before 2 a.m. The driver was Oree Bowen Jr., 55, and his passenger was Rebee Lassiter, 53.
The 2000 Dodge Durango they were in was traveling west on Lippitt Drive when the driver crossed over Newton Road and continued across the yard of 1600 Gadsden Drive and struck the brick side wall of an apartment building, police officials said.
Lassiter was able to exit the Durango, however, Bowen was trapped inside. The vehicle had struck a gas main, causing it to immediately ignite, killing Bowen.
The apartment the car hit was unoccupied. There was no further information released on the crash Monday.
The case remains under investigation.
