Bill Jones II, Darton's new men's golf coach, led the Cavs to a win in their first tournament of the season last month, but his guys struggled in their second tournament Monday at Kinderlou Forrest in Valdosta.
VALDOSTA -- Fresh off a win in its first tournament of the fall season, Darton College's golf team struggled to maintain that momentum Monday during the first round of the Thomas University Invitational, shooting a dismal 300 to put the Cavs 11 shots back of leader Shorter College (289) of the two-round, 12-team tournament, which concludes today.
There was some good, however, to come out of the day as sophomore leader Shad Tuten fired a 2-under 70, which put him two shots off the individual lead. Fellow sophomores Joe Sakulpolphaisan fired a 72 and Austin McNeil shot a 77, while freshmen Neil Graham (81) and Robert Robertson (84) struggled.
"Other than Shad and Joe, we just didn't play smart," first-year Darton coach Bill Jones III said. "The course was in good shape -- ideal conditions, in fact -- we just didn't bring it (Monday). My Nos. 3-5 just didn't show up. That's pretty much all you can say."
Freshman Chase Jones fired a respectable 74 playing as an individual.
"Wish we could've counted that score," Jones quipped.
