CORDELE -- Lee County's softball team is still alive in the Region 1-AAAA winner's bracket, but the Lady Trojans will have to win three in a row to take home the region title.
They fell to Houston County, 5-2, on Wednesday, and must beat Hardaway at 4 p.m. today in Hardaway to reach the double-elimination final against Houston.
If Lee County beats Hardaway today the Lady Trojans will finish no worse than second in the region, and that guarantees home field advantage in the first round of the state playoffs.
The Lady Trojans (14-11) could manage only three hits off of Houston ace Jessica Burroughs, who has already signed with Florida State, but two of those hits were home runs.
Natalie Shiver hit a solo shot in the first to give Lee County a 1-0 lead, and Brandi Blount hit a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth. Houston, which was hanging on to a 2-1 lead, blew the game open with a three-run sixth inning, and then hung on to advance to the finals.
Erin Callaway pitched for Lee, and gave up 10 hits but walked only one batter.
CRISP 5, WORTH 1: Crisp County scored four runs in the top of the seventh to upset defending Region 1-AAA champion Worth County, 5-1, in the region tournament on Wednesday. Haley Ellis went 2-for-3, Heather Ellis went 1-for-3 and Lauren Potts went 1-for-3 with an RBI for Worth.
Worth plays Cairo today at 4 p.m., and the winner faces Crisp at 6 p.m., but Worth would have to beat Crisp twice to win the title.
