Tougher rules needed in subsidized housing

Subsidized housing needs to be reworked. All but the most severely handicapped need to pay for at least 50 percent of the true market value of the service provided. The units need to be inspected weekly. There can be no guests staying for more than two weeks out of a year. No undocumented individuals permitted to stay at the home. That means folks that have a blood tie to the individual and approved by the Authority. Plus these folks can’t be more than 18 years old.

The yard and porch areas must be kept up. Those not meeting the minimum income due to acceptable cause would be provided employment refurbishing units and keeping up the grounds in return for the continued occupancy. They could work as housekeepers for the elderly or infirm in exchange for staying in the housing. All obvious expenditures would have to be explained and the source documented and established.

Let’s help out folks, but let’s not help them buy rims, manicures, tattoos, body piercings, cars or drugs. Let’s make them at least try to help themselves and learn to hold a job.

I used to own rental property and made the mistake of accepting GRFA receiptients as tenants. The good part was, I never had to collect rent from the tenants, the checks came in every month right on time. The problem was, when those folks moved out, without fail, I had to replace carpeting, patch and paint drywall, replace doors and locks, etc. Most of my properties rented for $400 per month ($4800/year). By the time I did all of the repairs, guess what? I was in the hole. Needless to say, I am no longer in the rental property business! When someone is given something with no sweat from their brow, there is a sense of entitlement and absolutely no accountability. The folks that run the GRFA program locally could not care less either.

Walt, some call you a racist. I believe you speak the truth, so, I guess I'm one also...at least in the eyes of your critics.

Subsidized housing AND MOST ALL SOCIAL PROGRAMS need to be reworked!! The purpose of the programs is to help people get back on their feet - not supply every need for many years (housing, food, medical, daycare, etc....) Objective Eyes, you are sooo right! If you don't have to work for it yourself, then you are most likely to abuse the opportunity for affordable housing. I have worked with these programs for many years so I know a lot about them. There needs to be cap-offs for EVERY PROGRAM. You need help with food - fine - you get two years! You need assistance with housing - fine - you get two years! ALSO, Food Stamps should be given to a mother and TWO CHILDREN ONLY!!!! If you are unmarried, then the MAX should be assistance for two children ONLY for two YEARS ONLY!!!! If making babies out of wedlock was not profitable, then it wouldn't be so prevalent!!! I blame the government for making it soooooo easy to be lazy and never take care of your responsibilities!!!
