ALBANY — The Dougherty County Commission is considering adopting a joint resolution with the city of Albany to allow for the collection of a $.75 fee on prepaid phone usage to offset 911 costs, officials say.
The Georgia General Assembly passed the fee increase earlier this year. According to Jim Vaught, deputy Dougherty County Emergency Management director, the fees are going to be collected regardless of what action the county takes.
The issue is whether those fees will be distributed back to Albany and Dougherty County, Vaught said.
"Yea, if they choose not to pass the ordinance the fees will still be charged, the state just won't give the money back to Dougherty County," Vaught said.

911 should be free! It should be illegal to charge to call an emergency line. Now charging to call 911 for a cat stuck up the tree I could see as legit, but not a TRUE emergency!!!

Grow up and join the real world. Nothing is free. If the user doesn't pay, then we all pay in raised taxes.
