ALBANY -- Mr. J. Paul Rakel, Sr., 510 Edgewood Lane, died Monday, October 10, 2011 at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital.
His funeral mass will be Thursday 11 AM at St. Teresa's Catholic Church. There will be a rosary service Wednesday 6 PM at Kimbrell-Stern with visitation to follow at 7 PM at Mr. Rakel's home.
A native of Albany, Mr. Rakel was a retired engineer and a member of St. Teresa's Catholic Church where he served on the board that oversaw the construction of the School.
Following his graduation from Albany High School where he played on the 1939 state championship football team Mr. Rakel enlisted in the Army Air Corps where he was a B-17 Pilot flying 23 mission from his base in England.
After his service to his country he entered and graduated from Auburn University in 1948 with a degree in mechanical engineering. Mr. Rakel was a member of the Elks Lodge, Military Officers Association and a past member of the Kiwanis Club.
Survivors include his sons. J. Paul Rakel, Jr. and his wife Gail, Pierre Rakel and his wife Susan both of Dawson; daughter, Amanda Oliver and her husband Ken, Tallahassee, FL; grandchildren, Olivia Rakel, Pierre Rakel, Caroline Rakel, Sarah Oliver and Bradford Oliver; brother Clem Rakel, Albany and a sister, Catherine Bowick, Columbus.
