ALBANY -- Mr. Lonnie Douglas Phelps, 87, of Albany, GA died on Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at the Willson Hospice House. A Memorial Service for Mr. Phelps will be held on Sunday, October 16, 2011 at 2 PM from Kimbrell-Stern Funeral Directors with Rev. Gerry Dorre officiating. Visitation for Mr. Phelps will be held on Saturday evening October 15th at Kimbrell-Stern from 6-8 PM.
Mr. Phelps was born July 10, 1924 to the late Lonnie Harris and Ruby Alene Stembridge Phelps. He was a native of Tift County Georgia and retired from the Albany Coca-Cola Bottling Plant after many years. Mr. Phelps ran the concession stand and the train at Chehaw Park, was involved with the Deputy Dog program at the Dougherty County Sheriff's Department and was a member of Woodmen of the World. Mr. Phelps was also a resident at Palmyra Nursing Home.
Mr. Phelps is survived by two daughters, Ann Akins of Leesburg, GA and Sheila Cook and her husband Tommy of Albany, GA; two sons, Lonnie Douglas Phelps, Jr. of Tennessee and Milton Ferrell Phelps of Albany, GA; two sisters, Christene Ross of Albany, GA and Nez Sapp of Jacksonville, GA; thirteen grandchildren, Tammy Akins, Renea Coker, Derick Akins, Chris Zolomy, Jason Gillis, Robin Hewett, Doug Phelps III, Shawn Phelps, Tamara Phelps, Benjamin Phelps, Ferrell Phelps, Jr., Scott Phelps and Patricia Ottom. Nineteen great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild also survive.
